Charles Frederick Kohl, heir to an Alaska Commercial Company fortune, finished this brick Tudor revival country house on forty oak-covered acres in 1914 and called it The Oaks. It runs to roughly 42,000 square feet across three storeys and 63 rooms. The Sisters of Mercy bought it in 1924 and used it as a convent, and Mercy High School has occupied the grounds since 1931. The house went on the National Register in 1982 and is rented out for concerts and weddings.
