The Key Marco cat
1896
Marco Island, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Frank Cushing dug a waterlogged muck pond here and pulled out wooden masks, painted deer heads and a six-inch kneeling panther figure, objects that should have rotted a thousand years ago and survived only because the muck kept out oxygen. Most began to crack and warp within hours of hitting the air. The cat is among the finest pieces of pre-Columbian art from North America, and it came home to Marco Island on loan in 2019 for the first time in 120 years.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
