The Key deer
1957
Big Pine Key, Florida
Joseph C Boone · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
A white-tailed deer subspecies the size of a large dog, marooned on these islands since the last ice age and down to a few dozen animals by the 1950s from hunting and fire. An eleven-year-old Boy Scout's letter-writing campaign helped get the refuge established. There are now several hundred, and the main threats are car strikes and a sea level rising into their freshwater.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
