A landowner handed the Borough of Norristown a small parcel and a few white-tailed deer in 1924, and the borough ran the result as a division of Elmwood Park. Monkeys, bears, peacocks and raccoons had joined them before the decade was out, in the bare wire cages that were standard at the time. The zoo turned a hundred in 2024 and still keeps bison, which have been on the grounds since near the beginning.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
