The sambar deer of St. Vincent Island
1908
St. Vincent Island, Florida
A private owner stocked this barrier island with game from elsewhere, and the Asian sambar, a deer the size of an elk, is the one that took. The island is a national wildlife refuge now, and the sambar are still on it, thinned each year by a hunt drawn by lottery. They swim between islands, which nobody planned for.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
