Martin's Cove and the handcart winter

The Martin handcart company, 500 Mormon emigrants pulling their belongings on foot, was caught by early blizzards on the Sweetwater in October 1856. More than a hundred died of cold and hunger before rescue wagons from Salt Lake reached them, and survivors sheltered in this granite cove. It remains the deadliest overland disaster of the whole westward migration, and the church runs the site as a pilgrimage where visitors pull handcarts along the river.
