Joseph Smith killed at Carthage Jail
June 27, 1844
Hancock County, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were held here awaiting trial when a mob with blackened faces stormed the building and shot them. Nobody was convicted. The killing set the Latter-day Saints on the road to the Great Basin under Brigham Young.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
