The Jericho Friends Meeting House, where Elias Hicks preached
1828

Elias Hicks helped build this meeting house and preached in it for decades. He freed the man he had enslaved in 1778, petitioned Albany for tighter manumission laws, and in 1811 published an argument that buying anything made by enslaved labour made the buyer complicit. The schism of 1827 and 1828 split American Quakers into Orthodox and Hicksite branches, the latter named for him by his opponents. He is buried in the burial ground here.
