The Jenkins Orphanage Band, the nursery of jazz
1891
Franklin Street, Charleston

A minister took in Black orphans and gave them discarded instruments. The bands toured to London and the St. Louis World's Fair to fund the home. Their ragged syncopated street playing fed early jazz, and produced players who later worked with Ellington and Basie.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
