It opened in 1882 as the East Ninth Street Colored School, the first public school for Black children in Fort Worth, and it was the city's only Black high school until the mid 1950s. Its band room produced Ornette Coleman, Dewey Redman, Charles Moffett, Prince Lasha and John Carter, along with King Curtis, whose tenor saxophone carried the Coasters and Aretha Franklin. The high school closed in 1973 as the district finished desegregating. The building reopened as a magnet school in 1998.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
