The Illinois and Michigan Canal office, where a state waterway was run

The canal commission ran the Illinois and Michigan Canal out of this Lockport building from 1836 until 1871, when the state took direct control. Contracts, tolls and the sale of the land the state had been granted along the route were all settled here, which made a small Will County town the administrative centre of the most important public works project in Illinois. The Will County Historical Society has kept it as a museum for decades.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
