The IBM PC, built in Boca Raton
1981
Boca Raton, Florida

IBM's Project Chess team, a dozen people deliberately parked in Boca Raton far from headquarters, built the IBM PC here in a single year by breaking every corporate rule: off-the-shelf parts, an outside operating system from a small company called Microsoft, and an open architecture anyone could copy. Anyone did. The clones it spawned defined what a computer is. The campus is now an office park with a marker.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
