Meharry and the doctors it trained

Founded by a salt merchant who had been helped by a Black family after a wagon accident and never forgot it, Meharry became the largest private historically Black institution training doctors and dentists in America. For much of the twentieth century it and Howard produced the overwhelming majority of Black physicians in the country.
