The Florida Canal marks the back line of colonial Louisiana

French colonial land grants along the Mississippi ran forty arpents back from the river, and this eighteenth century canal was dug along that line. It runs from what is now Faubourg Marigny down through St. Bernard Parish, roughly parallel to the river. The line it follows is also about where the high natural levee soil gave out and the swamp began, so it fixed the back edge of settled Louisiana for generations.
