The Haymaker well made Murrysville the first commercial gas field

Brothers Michael and Obediah Haymaker drilled here in 1878 and hit what is generally counted the nation's first commercial natural gas well. No pipeline reached it until 1883, so for five years roughly 35 million cubic feet a day simply blew into the air, about 60 billion cubic feet in total. The leasing frenzy that followed turned violent in the Haymaker Riots, named for the speculator killed in one of them. Since 1933 a hillside of planted trees has spelled the town's name out for drivers on Route 22, and the Y is supposed to point at the old well.
