The Granite City YMCA and its Gothic front
1926

Granite City's YMCA branch was founded in 1916 for a town organised around steel, and this building went up for it between 1924 and 1926. The St. Louis firm Wedemeyer and Nelson gave it a red brick and green tile front broken by vertical shafts and topped with a parapet, the only Gothic Revival institutional building in the city. It carried athletics, adult education and citizenship classes for a mill workforce that was largely foreign born.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
