The Gaylord Building, put up to build the Illinois and Michigan Canal

This yellow limestone warehouse went up on the canal bank in 1838 to hold material for digging the Illinois and Michigan Canal, the ditch that finally connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi and made Chicago a port for the interior. An Italianate section was added in 1859. The building decayed for most of the next century, and a restoration begun in 1983 was influential enough that the National Trust for Historic Preservation took it on as one of its own sites.
