The Gandy Dancer keeps Ann Arbor's 1886 Michigan Central depot

Detroit architect Frederick Spier built this Richardsonian Romanesque station in 1886 out of glacial fieldstone hauled from Four Mile Lake, with stained glass, red oak trim and separate waiting rooms for men and women. At its peak the Michigan Central ran as many as 13 trains a day through here between Detroit and Chicago. A restaurant company bought the building from Penn Central in 1969 and opened it as the Gandy Dancer in 1970, named for the section crews who laid the track.
