The Flatirons, and the tax Boulder voted on itself to buy them

Five numbered slabs of 290 million year old sandstone stand on end along the east face of Green Mountain, and they are the reason most people can picture Boulder without having been there. The city doubled in population through the 1950s and in 1967 its voters approved a sales tax dedicated to buying the land around them, the first time an American city taxed itself specifically for open space. Boulder now holds more than 45,000 acres bought that way, and the Flatirons themselves carry over a thousand climbing routes.
