Aurora's Grand Army of the Republic Hall, and the city's first free library
1877
Aurora, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Union veterans put up this hall on Stolp Island in 1877 as a meeting room and a memorial to their own war. Four years later the Aurora Public Library Association moved in, making the building the city's first tax supported free library, and it served that purpose until a purpose built library opened on Benton Street in 1904. It now holds a museum of Civil War material the veterans collected themselves.
