The fall of Frank Olson
1953
Hotel Statler, Seventh Avenue, New York City
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Nine days after the CIA dosed him with LSD without his knowledge at a work retreat, Army scientist Frank Olson went out a thirteenth-floor window of the Hotel Statler across from Penn Station. The agency called it suicide and kept the LSD secret for twenty two years, until the Rockefeller Commission cracked MKUltra open and the government paid his family and apologized. His son had the body exhumed in 1994. The forensic team found injuries consistent with a blow before the fall, and the case has never closed.
