The range carries the name of Jose Maria Verdugo, who was granted Rancho San Rafael in 1784 and whose family held the land for generations. The Verdugos rise straight off the valley floor and divide Burbank and Glendale from the San Gabriel Valley behind them. Housing now surrounds the range on every side, which leaves its deer, bobcats and mountain lions cut off from the wider mountains. Most of the ridge is public land threaded with fire roads.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
