The Durant House, a bricklayer's own brick farmhouse on the prairie
1843
St. Charles Township, Illinois
Bryant Durant came west from Massachusetts in 1837 and laid up this small brick house in 1843, just before marrying Jerusha Shurtleff. Six children were born in it. The Peterson family bought the place in the 1880s and added a Victorian kitchen on the west side, which is why the building reads as two eras at once. It went on the National Register in 1976 and is open as a museum in the county forest preserve that now surrounds it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
