The du Pont powder mills on the Brandywine
1802
Hagley, Wilmington, Delaware
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Eleuthere Irenee du Pont built black powder mills along the Brandywine with their fourth wall facing the water on purpose, so an explosion would blow out toward the creek instead of into the workers. They blew up regularly anyway. The company became the largest chemical firm in the world and the state has been shaped by it ever since.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
