An explosion at the Eddystone shell plant kills 139, most of them women
1917
Eddystone, Pennsylvania
Four days after the United States declared war on Germany, the loading room at the Eddystone Ammunition Corporation blew up on 10 April 1917. It killed 139 people, mostly women and girls packing black powder into artillery shells, and injured hundreds more. Fifty five of the dead could never be identified and were buried together. Investigators first blamed German saboteurs, then Russians, and the likeliest cause was faulty equipment.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
