The Delta and the levee builders
1880
Sacramento Delta, California
Matthew Trump · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
A thousand square miles of tule marsh was diked into islands by Chinese crews working with wheelbarrows and shovels, creating some of the richest farmland in the world. The peat soil has since oxidised away so far that many islands now sit below sea level behind their own levees.
