A grocer, a dry-goods man and two hardware merchants, Stanford, Crocker, Huntington and Hopkins, put up the money for the Central Pacific and built east from this levee. Federal loans paid by the mile made them four of the richest men in America, and one of them endowed a university in his dead son's name.
