The Dakota War and the Mankato hangings

Mankato, Minnesota
After treaty payments failed and traders told the starving Dakota to eat grass, war broke out along the Minnesota River. Thirty-eight men were hanged simultaneously at Mankato on Lincoln's order, still the largest mass execution in American history, after he commuted 265 other sentences.
