Grant expels the Jews
December 17, 1862
Broadway, Paducah
General Order No. 11 expelled all Jews from Grant's department within 24 hours, blaming them for cotton smuggling. Cesar Kaskel of Paducah travelled to Washington, reached Lincoln directly, and the order was revoked within three weeks, the most sweeping official act against Jews in American history, undone by one merchant from this street.
