Washington ran his best intelligence network out of this farming village behind British lines, a farmer, a tavern keeper and a Manhattan merchant passing coded letters and invisible ink by whaleboat across the Sound. They gave him the warning that saved the French fleet at Newport and unmasked Benedict Arnold's handler. The identity of one agent, a woman signed only 355, has never been established.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
