The capture of Major André at Tarrytown
1780
Tarrytown, New York

On 23 September 1780 three militiamen stopped a traveller on the road here, made him undress, and found plans of the West Point defences folded inside his stocking. He was Major John André, adjutant general of the British army, carrying what Benedict Arnold had sold him. John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart and David Williams turned down the bribe he offered and handed him over. Arnold got word and ran, André was hanged as a spy, and the marble monument raised on this spot in 1853 carries a figure of Paulding on top.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
