The Chitimacha keep their ground

After a long war with the French and two centuries of loss, the Chitimacha are the only Louisiana tribe still living on part of their ancestral homeland. A Massachusetts woman who collected their double-weave river cane baskets bought the remaining land and held it until the federal government took it in trust. The weaving survives, and so does a language that had one fluent speaker left in the 1930s and is being taught again from her recordings.
