A ridge of land settled by Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw families who had gone deep into the marsh to be left alone has lost about 98 percent of its area since 1955, to subsidence, canals and storms. In 2016 the federal government granted $48 million to move the community inland, the first such resettlement funded in the United States, and a preview of an argument the rest of the coast has not had yet.
