Hog Hammock and the Gullah-Geechee

The descendants of the enslaved people who worked Thomas Spalding's plantation still live at Hog Hammock on Sapelo Island, one of the last intact Gullah-Geechee communities anywhere, reachable only by ferry. They kept a language, a foodway and a land base through emancipation, a millionaire's estate era and the state buying most of the island. The fight now is property taxes and zoning, which threaten what four centuries could not.
