The Charter Oak and the vanished charter
1687
Hartford, Connecticut
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
When a royal governor demanded Connecticut surrender its charter, the candles went out during the meeting and the document vanished, hidden, the story goes, in a hollow oak. The tree fell in an 1856 storm and Connecticut has been putting it on things ever since, including the state quarter.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
