The chain across the Hudson
1778
West Point, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
To stop the Royal Navy sailing up and cutting the colonies in half, ironworkers forged a chain of two-foot links weighing sixty tons and floated it across the river on log rafts, hauling it in each winter before the ice came. The British never tested it. Links of it are still stacked at the academy above.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
