The Hudson turns twice here in quick succession, so a sailing ship had to slow almost to a stop under the guns on the bluff, which made this the most strategically valuable ground in the country and the post Benedict Arnold agreed to hand over. Jefferson made it the military academy in 1802, largely to produce engineers, and its graduates commanded both sides in the Civil War.
