The Broad Institute makes Kendall Square a genome factory

The Whitehead Institute and MIT had run a genome centre here since 1990, and it sequenced more of the human genome than any other laboratory in the world. Eli and Edythe Broad put up 100 million dollars, later doubled, to turn that effort into a permanent institute shared by MIT, Harvard and the Harvard teaching hospitals, and it opened in 2004 under Eric Lander. Its sequencing floors and its work on CRISPR gene editing pulled biotech money into Kendall Square on a scale nowhere else in the country matched. The patent fight over CRISPR between the Broad and the University of California ran for the better part of a decade.
