The Broad Canal, all that is left of Cambridge the seaport

In 1806 a group of speculators cut a canal system into the tidal flats along the Charles and set out to make East Cambridge a working port. The Broad Canal was 80 feet wide at the low water mark and had branches running through much of the neighbourhood. Everything else was filled in long ago. One short stub of water beside Kendall Square is the only piece of the port that survives.
