The Birwood Wall, built to separate Black and white homeowners
1941

A foot thick, six feet high and about half a mile long, this concrete wall went up in 1941 for one reason: to keep Black and white homeowners on opposite sides of it. By 1971 both sides were predominantly Black and the wall had no line left to hold. Most of it is still standing, painted over the years with murals along the Birwood Avenue alley.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
