Every April the university turns most of Madison's screens over to a festival that runs eight days and shows close to ninety programmes, from restorations to first features by people from Wisconsin, and it is the largest campus-based film festival in the United States. Its historic home is the Barrymore, a 1929 neighbourhood movie house on the east side that a couple of locals reopened in 1987 to try to keep the Schenk-Atwood strip alive. David Koepp, who studied here for two years before UCLA and went on to write Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man and Panic Room, comes back to introduce his own pictures.
