Piermont, the pier that was the Erie Railroad's front door
1841
Piermont, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
In 1841 the Erie Railroad drove a pier nearly a mile out across the shallows here to reach water deep enough for steamboats, because its eastern terminus had to sit inside New York State. Passengers stepped off the train and onto a boat for the run down to the city. Eleazar Lord, the railroad's first president, renamed the village by joining that pier to the mountain above it. Interstate rules changed soon after and the Erie moved its terminus to Jersey City.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
