After the defeat at Germantown, Washington dug in on the hills at Whitemarsh, just north of British held Philadelphia, and stayed there from early November. Howe marched out and probed the American lines from 5 to 8 December 1777 in a series of skirmishes rather than one set battle, then went back to the city without forcing a general engagement. It was the last significant contact of the year, and three days later the army broke camp for the march that ended at Valley Forge.
