The Battle of Staten Island, a raid that went wrong
1777
Staten Island, New York
With Howe gone south with most of the British army, John Sullivan judged the garrison left on Staten Island weak and crossed on 22 August 1777 against Washington's wish that he bring his men to the main army instead. A guide walked one detachment into the front of the British position rather than behind it, and there were not enough boats to get everyone back. American dead, wounded and captured came to at least double the British losses.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
