Braddock's defeat on the Monongahela
1755
Braddock, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
On 9 July 1755 a British column under General Edward Braddock, marching to take Fort Duquesne at the forks of the Ohio, was broken here by French and Canadian troops under Captain Daniel Lienard de Beaujeu and their Native allies. Both commanders were killed in the fighting. The defeat ended the Braddock Expedition and left the Ohio Country in French hands at the opening of the French and Indian War.
