The Battle of Pell's Point buys Washington's army a day

On 18 October 1776 British and Hessian troops landed on Pell's Point to get behind the American army retreating off Manhattan. John Glover's brigade of about 750 Massachusetts men fought from behind the stone field walls, firing and dropping back one wall at a time against a much larger force. The delay was enough for Washington to move the main army north toward White Plains. Some of those walls still run across what are now the Split Rock and Pelham Bay golf courses.
