The Battle of Gilgal Church costs Hooker's corps 700 men

On 15 June 1864 the divisions of John Geary and Daniel Butterfield, both from Joseph Hooker's XX Corps, attacked William Hardee's entrenched Confederates here and were thrown back with roughly 700 casualties. It was one action in a week of them, along a front that ran from Lost Mountain through Pine Mountain to Brushy Mountain while Sherman worked his way toward Marietta. Elsewhere on that line the same day, Union troops overran a Confederate skirmish line and took about 300 prisoners.
