The Monongah disaster
December 6, 1907
Marion County, West Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
An explosion killed at least 362 men and boys, the worst mining accident in American history, though the true figure was higher because companies did not count everyone underground. It came in a month that killed over 3,000 miners nationally and led to the creation of the Bureau of Mines.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
