The Alexandria Canal carries boats over the Potomac to the port

Alexandria's merchants were watching Georgetown take the coal and grain traffic off the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, so they cut a canal of their own from the C and O across the river down to their own wharves. Boats reached it over the Potomac in a wooden aqueduct trough. The tide lock at the Alexandria end has been excavated and is open to look at.
