Cut in the 19th century as the Metairie Outlet Canal, this drainage channel pushes New Orleans rainwater out to Lake Pontchartrain and marks most of the boundary between the city and Metairie. On the morning of 29 August 2005 a stretch of concrete floodwall on the Orleans side collapsed and the gap opened to roughly 450 feet. Water kept pouring into Lakeview for two and a half days after the surge had dropped, making this the most destructive of the twenty levee failures that flooded the metro.
